The sustainability assessment of value creation systems is based on empirical data. Suitable sources include both primary data collected through interviews, surveys, and case studies, as well as secondary data derived from existing studies, life cycle assessments, or databases. This guide does not prescribe specific data collection methods; rather, it defines the thematic focus of the data collection and the subsequent evaluation of data for sustainability assessment purposes. Depending on available resources and thematic suitability, different data collection methods may be combined.<\/p>\n
The data collection is based on a structured questionnaire. All items included in the questionnaire should be answerable through expert interviews. If resources allow, it is advisable to use multiple quantitative and qualitative data sources for each question. This is particularly relevant for the \u201cQuestions along the sustainability dimensions\u201d (Step 4.2<\/a>).<\/p>\n Before data collection can be carried out in Step 5<\/a> , the questionnaire must be adapted and formulated in accordance with the analytical focus and system boundaries defined in Module 1. The content requirements for the questionnaire are structured into three thematic blocks in Steps 4.1<\/a> to 4.3<\/a> . For each item listed therein, the following preparatory steps are required:<\/p>\n The preparation of the questionnaire may be supported by preliminary discussions with actors from the value creation system or with overarching experts. Participants from the profile survey in Step 3<\/a>for example, are well suited for this purpose. As part of the preliminary discussions, the system boundaries established in Step 2<\/a> can also be reviewed and discussed.
