Due to the endosymbionts lignocellulolytic enzymes and its ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen for the synthesis of amino acids, the symbiont is able to degrade complex cellulose-containing residues. In terms of sustainable circular economy, by-products and residues from agriculture or paludiculture such as straw, rapeseed finish or reeds are to be recycled as a carbon source in a fermentation process in order to build up protein-rich microbial biomass.
