The demand for bio-based fine chemicals for industrial use is growing, together with the demand for pharmaceutical remedies that are not synthetic but plant-based and of demonstrably high quality. About 70% of the medicinal plants needed in Germany for the production of phytopharmaceuticals are imported. However, wild collections in the countries of origin threaten biodiversity and a consistently high quality is often not guaranteed. The Plant³ Alliance therefore specifically promotes the cultivation and use of regionally grown medicinal plants for phytopharmaceuticals and the use of biological resources for the production of fine chemicals.
