SEA
BRIEFLY EXPLAINED
Algae from the sea have a high value-adding potential: firstly, as tailor-made marine sugars (oligo-/polysaccharides) for fine chemicals and analytical reference chemicals in food technology (e.g. carrageenan), secondly, as cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, and thirdly, as food supplements and prebiotics for animal breeding.
In addition, residues and flotsam are the starting point for animal feed (fatty acids and proteins) and fertiliser. As with land and peatland, fibres obtained from the sea can be used for building and insulation materials or ultimately for energy.
