Sonnentau aus M-V - with synergistic effect against multi-resistant pathogens (SaMV)
Within the framework of the project, it has been demonstrated that sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) cultivated in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is highly superior in quality to imported medicinal drugs due to its unique combination of active substances and is suitable for the development of a phytotherapeutic. In the process, proof of the efficacy of sundew extracts from M-V against various bacterial pathogens was provided and possible further phytotherapeutic indications were derived. The exploration of the previously unknown synergistic molecular mechanism of action, the "mode of action", was also successfully addressed. Differentiation from inferior imported products (e.g. D. madagascariensis) was ensured by developing analytical quality standards. In order to have sufficient high-quality sundew (D. rotundifolia) in pharmacopoeia quality available for the project, it was cultivated ecologically and sustainably in rewetted moors in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
The overall aim of the project is to scientifically test the suitability of sundew for a novel herbal medicinal product for the treatment of upper respiratory tract infections as well urinary tract infections. To this end, scientific proof of the efficacy and safety of sundew was provided within the framework of basic research, and a start was made on clarifying the mechanism of action. Within the framework of the proposed project, the scientific basis and quality control mechanisms were first created and a functional model was developed.
