Value creation systems are complex networks that are interconnected across regions and sectors. In the second step of the sustainability assessment, the value creation system is delimited using the analytical focus in order to isolate the part of the system in which the defined target variable is effective. In addition to the analytical focus, further user-defined objectives are incorporated into the delimitation process. The procedure is described below.
As a first level of delimitation, the bioeconomy, as a fundamental economic concept, forms the basis of this assessment. All components and relationships within the value creation system under investigation are therefore directly or indirectly linked to the use of bio-based resources and processes. In this context, the value creation system is not limited exclusively to the production and processing of biomass, but also includes related services as well as research and development activities.
